Make a Wearable Woven Wrap

Although I have made dozens of wrap dresses from knit fabrics over the years, I recently realised that I have never actually made myself a wrap, or surplice, dress in a woven fabric.

Now if you've ever bought a ready-to-wear wrap dress or blouse, you may have found that it is prone to gaping in the front.

The good news is that if you already have a well-fitting basic block pattern, you can create your own wrap style dress or top that always sits properly on your body. I used my Sure-Fit Designs Body Blueprint to create this perfectly fitting dress, following Glenda's instructions.

Specifically, I pinched out 1/4" (6mm) at the shoulder, and I removed 3/8" (1cm) at the bodice bottom crossover. I made separate facings, 2.5" (about 6cm) wide. The skirt front was drafted similarly, i.e. I doubled up the pattern piece so that I had both left and right sides. I cut a straight line, parallel to centre front, through at the corresponding leg of the dart, down to the hem, and added a 2.5" turnover facing.

I think that it would also be a good idea to add an invisible press stud at the centre front, just below the crossover, to ensure that the bodice stays in place even if your ties loosen a bit while wearing, which they may be wont to do in a silk or other slippery fabric.

Now that I have confirmed that the pattern fits me well, I can use it to create a few different designs. These have caught my eye:

El Vestido Cruzado

Aunque he hecho docenas de vestidos cruzados con telas tejidos de punto (jersey) a lo largo de los años, recientemente me di cuenta de que nunca me había hecho un vestido cruzado con una tela tejida textil.

Si alguna vez ha comprado un vestido cruzado o una blusa cruzada en ropa de confección, es posible que haya descubierto que es propenso a abrirse en el frente.

La buena noticia es que si ya tiene un patrón de bloque básico que le queda bien, puede crear su propia prenda de estilo envolvente que siempre se ajuste correctamente a su cuerpo. Usé mi Body Blueprint de Sure-Fit Designs para crear este vestido perfectamente ajustado, siguiendo las instrucciones de Glenda.

Específicamente, eliminé 1/4" (6 mm) en el hombro y 3/8" (1 cm) en el cruce inferior.

Creo que también sería una buena idea agregar un botón de presión invisible en el centro del frente para garantizar que el corpiño permanezca en su lugar incluso si las corbatas se aflojan un poco mientras las usa, lo que es posible ocurrir cuando es hecho de seda, o otra tela suave.
